President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to issue an executive order on Monday to allow TikTok to resume operations in the United States. The popular social media app, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, stopped functioning for its 170 million American users on Sunday after a law banning its operations took effect, citing concerns over potential misuse of American user data by Chinese authorities.
In a statement shared on social media, Trump proposed a joint ownership structure for the app, saying, “I would like the United States to have a 50 per cent ownership position in a joint venture.”
The move aims to address national security concerns while ensuring TikTok’s continued availability to its American user base.
