Living as a Filipino overseas often comes with numerous challenges and opportunities, especially for those who embark on this journey in search of a better life for themselves and their families. The story of Gelia Acer is a compelling example of such a journey. From working as a sales crew member at Manollete Bakeshop to becoming a registered healthcare professional, Gelia’s path is marked by resilience, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of her dreams.
Gelia’s career began far from the medical field.
“Before I embarked on my journey into the medical field, I worked as a sales crew member at Manollete Bakeshop,” she shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.
In this role, she honed her communication and multitasking skills, ensuring customers received the best service possible. This early experience was instrumental in developing the essential skills she would later need in her healthcare career.
Despite the demanding nature of her job at the bakeshop, Gelia never lost sight of her goal to work in healthcare.
“From a very young age, I have always been drawn to the field of nursing,” she says.
Her passion for nursing was evident even in childhood, where she would play nurse with her cousin. These early experiences sparked a lifelong desire to help those in need, especially the elderly.
The turning point in Gelia’s life came when she decided to move to Dubai, seeking better financial opportunities.
“I chose to pursue employment abroad to earn a higher income, which will help me achieve my personal dreams and secure savings for my child’s college education,” she explains.
Her first position in Dubai was in a homecare facility, followed by a role in the ICU department of a hospital. This experience was pivotal in her professional growth, allowing her to manage patients with complex medical conditions and providing comprehensive nursing care.
“The highlight of my career to date has been the diverse experience and skills I have gained through my work in both homecare and hospital settings,” Gelia shares.
Working in these environments equipped her to handle a wide range of medical situations with competence and care. Her responsibilities included assisting the dentist during various procedures, sterilizing equipment, and ensuring a smooth workflow in the clinic.
Gelia’s journey was not without its challenges. As a single mother, she faced the emotional turmoil of leaving her children behind to work abroad.
“One of the hardest conflicts I faced was the emotional turmoil of potentially leaving my children behind,” she says.
To overcome this, she meticulously planned and researched potential guardians for her children, ensuring their well-being during her absence. Her support system, consisting of extended family and close friends, provided the emotional and logistical support needed to move forward with her decision.
Drawing inspiration from other single mothers who had faced similar battles, Gelia remained steadfast in her commitment to securing a better future for her children.
“Their stories of resilience and unwavering determination were beacons of hope for me,” she recalls.
Through careful planning and a strong support network, she navigated the challenges of settling in a new country.
Gelia’s dedication to her profession and her family is evident in her daily work as a dental nurse.
“Taking care of sick individuals, particularly elderly patients, brings warmth to my heart,” she expresses.
The fulfillment she derives from her job stems from the tangible difference she makes in her patients’ lives, providing them with the care and compassion they need.
Looking to the future, Gelia has ambitious plans. Once her tenure abroad is complete, she aspires to leverage her skills and experiences to contribute to local development projects in her home country.
“My future goals include establishing a startup that creates job opportunities and supports sustainable practices,” she says.
Additionally, she aims to advocate for educational programs that empower underprivileged communities.
To her fellow Filipinos facing challenges overseas, Gelia offers words of encouragement.
“Remember to stay connected with our community and seek support when needed. Prioritize savings and manage your finances wisely. In matters of employment, always verify opportunities through reputable sources to avoid scams,” she advises.
