Kuwait has enacted updates to its traffic law, extending driving licence validity and introducing new vehicle categories. The changes were announced by Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al Sabah, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence and Interior.
Under the revised rules, driving licences for Kuwaitis and GCC nationals will now be valid for 15 years, while expatriates’ licences will have a three-year validity, a shift from the previous annual renewal system.
General driving licences are split into categories: Category ‘A’ covers large vehicles such as public transport, trailers, and hazardous material carriers, while Category ‘B’ covers smaller passenger vehicles and light transport. Validity for both categories is 10 years for Kuwaitis and GCC nationals, and three years for expatriates.
Additionally, physical licences will no longer be issued, as all licences must be accessed through the “Kuwait Mobile ID” app. New regulations also include updated inspection intervals for vehicles and motorcycles, starting three years after purchase, and continuing at three- and two-year intervals over a total of eight years.
