Tourists visiting the UAE will soon be able to recover value-added tax (VAT) on e-commerce purchases made during their stay, the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) announced on Monday.
The new VAT refund system, according to a Khaleej Times report, allows tourists to claim refunds for online purchases directly through e-commerce platforms and stores registered with the FTA. By providing personal details and travel document information at the time of purchase, eligible tourists can ensure a smooth refund process, which is finalized as they leave the country.
This initiative builds on the UAE’s previous success with a fully digital tax refund system launched over two years ago. Designed in collaboration with Planet, the authorized VAT refund operator, the system aims to simplify the process for tourists, enhancing convenience and efficiency.
Khalid Ali Al Bustani, Director-General of the FTA, highlighted that this first-of-its-kind initiative reinforces the UAE’s position as a leading global tourist destination and a hub for innovation.
