Tossing cigarette butts in Abu Dhabi? You could be fined up to AED 2,000

Abu Dhabi authorities have introduced stricter penalties to maintain public cleanliness, warning residents against improper waste disposal, particularly cigarette butts.

According to a Gulf Today report, the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has urged the public to follow waste disposal regulations, emphasizing the importance of a sustainable and clean environment. Under the new rules, anyone caught discarding cigarette butts outside designated containers faces a AED 500 fine for the first offence. Repeat violations will lead to increased penalties, with fines rising to AED 1,000 for the second offence and AED 2,000 for the third and subsequent violations.

In addition to cigarette littering, improper disposal of food and drink waste in non-designated areas will result in similar fines—starting at AED 500 and escalating to AED2,000 or more for repeat violations.

Meanwhile, those found dumping waste in undesignated areas face even harsher penalties, with fines starting at AED 1,000, doubling to AED 2,000 for the second offence, and increasing to AED 4,000 or more for repeated violations.
