Tibet earthquake leaves 53 dead, tremors felt in Nepal and India

A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in Xigaze, located in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, on Tuesday morning, leaving at least 53 people dead and 62 injured, according to state media reports. The quake hit at 9:05 a.m. Beijing time, causing significant damage and the collapse of multiple buildings.

The China Earthquake Networks Centre reported the epicenter at 28.5°N latitude and 87.45°E longitude, with a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Tremors were felt in neighboring regions, including Nepal’s capital Kathmandu, Bhutan, and parts of northern India.

In Kathmandu, residents fled their homes in panic. “We felt a very strong earthquake, but no injuries or damages have been reported yet,” said Anoj Raj Ghimire, a local official near Mount Everest.

Rescue and relief operations are underway as authorities assess the damage and provide aid to those affected.
