The 2024 World AeroPress Championship in Lisbon, Portugal, saw three talented Filipino baristas—Aaron Barredo from Oman, Mary Jane Octa Palma from Qatar, and John Eric Enopia from the Philippines—take to the global stage, proudly representing their respective countries. Though they only advanced to the first round, their participation marked a significant milestone in their careers and the Filipino coffee community.
Aaron, who previously won the National Champion title at the 2024 AeroPress Competition in Oman, shared his gratitude for the opportunity. “Hindi man po kami nanalo or nakapag-uwi ng trophy, we are still proud na makatungtong sa world stage bilang Pilipino,” Barredo told The Global Filipino Magazine. His journey from working at a petrol station to becoming a Barista Trainer and Quality Control at Crown Muscat International highlights his dedication to the craft. His participation in the championship brought pride to the Filipino community in Oman.
Similarly, Mary Jane, representing Qatar, has risen through the ranks of the coffee industry. Starting as a casual server in 2018, she eventually became a barista and now works as a supervisor at Fuel Specialty Coffee. Winning the National Champion title in Qatar, she proudly carried the flag at the world stage in Lisbon. Palma credits her success to the support of her family and colleagues and hopes to inspire other overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to pursue their passions.
Meanwhile, John Eric, who represented the Philippines, also shared a story of perseverance. Despite his initial hesitations and personal challenges, he committed to the Philippine AeroPress Championship, making his way to Lisbon to compete on behalf of his country. Grateful for the support from his loved ones, Enopia’s debut at the competition reflects the growing enthusiasm for specialty coffee in the Philippines.
