There are many ways to tell a story—but for one Filipino artist, the most powerful narratives are found not in words, but in the expressions of people we often pass by. At 47, Dennis Dela Cruz, a seasoned graphic and multimedia designer working at Aura Living in Dubai, has transformed everyday encounters into compelling portraits that speak volumes about human emotion, resilience, and connection.
Now on display at the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai’s Rizal Hall, Portraits Without Borders is Dennis’ first solo exhibit under the Museo sa Konsulado cultural program. The show invites the public to reflect on the raw and honest beauty of human faces captured in black and white—images that transcend language and geography to reveal something deeply universal.
Turning expressions into stories
“What inspired me to create Portraits Without Borders was the universal language of the human face,” Dennis shared. “I’ve always been drawn to expressions—those quiet, unspoken moments that reveal who we are beyond words, culture, or background.”
Rather than seeking out staged or picture-perfect moments, Dennis let his camera follow instinct and emotion. During his travels, many of his subjects were strangers—people he met where spoken language often wasn’t shared, but mutual curiosity and respect were.
“It wasn’t about age, status, or appearance,” he said. “It was about emotion. Sometimes, the most powerful portraits came from the quietest moments.”
Dennis chose black and white to strip away distractions and focus entirely on expression, light, and emotion. His aim was simple yet profound: “My hope is that viewers walk away reminded that no matter where we come from, we are more alike than different. That behind every face is a story worth hearing and a human worth knowing.”
Living abroad and finding cultural pride
With nearly 16 years of experience living in the UAE, Dennis believes his journey abroad has not only widened his perspective but also deepened his pride in his Filipino heritage.
“Living in the UAE has broadened my perspective as a Filipino artist,” he explained. “Being surrounded by diverse cultures made me realize how deeply connected we all are. It’s shaped my work to focus on shared human emotions while also making me more proud and intentional about representing my Filipino roots.”
To have his exhibit featured by the Consulate is especially meaningful. “This exhibit is more than art, it’s a piece of home,” he added. “To be featured by the Philippine Consulate in Dubai is a reminder that no matter where we are, our stories matter.”
Among the many powerful images in the exhibit, one holds particular personal weight for Dennis—a portrait of a blind elder from Banaue. “Though she couldn’t see me, her presence was powerful,” he recalled. “Her face told a story shaped by time, tradition, and the land. She reminded me so much of my own mother—strong, quiet, and wise.”
Beyond photography and words of encouragement
When he’s not behind the camera, Dennis continues to explore creative expression through graphic design, wall art, and black-and-white sketches. His passion for visual storytelling runs deep—and he encourages other Filipino creatives to start telling their own stories.
“To my fellow Pinoy creatives abroad: if you want to create, just START. Don’t wait for the perfect moment,” he said. “Begin with what you have. Your voice and your culture matter. Through art, you carry your roots with you. Be proud and keep creating.”
Portraits Without Borders is on view at Rizal Hall in the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai, open to the public from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, until July 18, 2025. Admission is free.
