In a world where careers often follow straight lines, some paths curve, transform, and bloom into something extraordinary. Such is the story of a Filipina in Dubai whose career evolved from healing bodies to designing smiles — a journey of reinvention, purpose, and resilience. Her name is Hazel Trajano Castro, a 47-year-old dental department owner, smile designer, and entrepreneur whose 19-year journey abroad continues to inspire many who dream of building a meaningful life through hard work and heart.
Finding passion and purpose in every smile
Before stepping into the world of dentistry, Hazel was a licensed physiotherapist in Dinalupihan, Bataan, where she ran her own clinic helping patients recover mobility and improve their quality of life. “It was a rewarding chapter in my professional journey, one where I learned the value of trust, compassion, and personalized care,” she shared.
But destiny had other plans. When Hazel moved abroad 19 years ago, she started as a dental assistant, a role far from her leadership position back home. Yet, instead of seeing it as a step down, she viewed it as a new beginning. “Although I started my career as a dental assistant 19 years ago, I never saw it as just a job — it was the beginning of a passion-driven path that would eventually lead me to where I am today,” she said.

Working closely with dentists and technicians, Hazel discovered her passion for aesthetic dentistry — a field where science meets art. “I discovered the power of aesthetic dentistry to truly change lives — restoring not just smiles, but self-confidence,” she said.
That passion soon became her purpose. In January 2022, she made one of the boldest decisions of her life — to open her own clinic. “Taking that leap was both challenging and empowering. It was a turning point that transformed me from a support role into a leader, entrepreneur, and smile designer in my own right.”
Today, Hazel proudly leads the Dental Department of French Medical Center in the UAE. She manages a talented team and provides personalized smile design services that reflect compassion, professionalism, and excellence. “Becoming a clinic owner has allowed me to bring my vision to life — to create a space where patients feel safe, heard, and proud of their smile. That decision didn’t just elevate my career, it gave it purpose,” she said with conviction.
Love, sacrifice, and the strength to keep going
Hazel’s journey abroad began with a dream bigger than herself — to give her son a better life. “My decision to work abroad wasn’t just about career growth; it was a choice rooted in love and purpose,” she said. “My main goal has always been to provide my son with a better future, and giving him the chance to study abroad was a dream I was determined to fulfill.”
Like many overseas Filipinos, Hazel faced the familiar struggles of homesickness, exhaustion, and rebuilding life from scratch. “Leaving my home country, closing my physiotherapy clinic, and starting from zero in a completely new environment was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made,” she recalled.
The early years were filled with sacrifices. “There were times I missed important family moments, and many nights I cried quietly because of homesickness and the pressure to succeed — not for myself alone, but for my son’s future,” she said.

What kept her going was her faith and the people she loved most. “What helped me through those times was my faith in God and the unwavering love of my family, especially my son. He has always been my biggest motivation. Every time I felt like giving up, I reminded myself: I’m doing this for him.”
Hazel also found comfort in the Filipino community abroad. “I leaned on a small but strong support system of fellow Filipino workers who understood my struggles and reminded me I wasn’t alone,” she said. “Their kindness, advice, and shared laughter helped me survive the toughest days.”
Among her greatest inspirations is her mother. “The person I look up to the most is my mother — her strength, grace, and quiet resilience have always inspired me. She taught me to never give up, to stay humble, and to lead with compassion, no matter what position I hold.”
Now, as she reflects on her two-decade journey, Hazel sees every hardship as a stepping stone. “Struggles are not setbacks; they are stepping stones,” she said firmly. “Today, I stand stronger, not because life was easy, but because I never stopped pushing forward with purpose, heart, and faith.”
Building a “Better You” — a dream rooted in compassion
For Hazel, her work as a smile designer is not just about perfecting appearances but restoring confidence. “What I enjoy most about my current work is the ability to make people feel confident, happy, and seen — often with just one smile,” she said.
Her passion for dentistry comes from a deep desire to help others. “While I began my career in physiotherapy, my journey in the dental field opened up a different kind of joy — the instant emotional transformation that comes when someone sees their new smile for the first time,” she explained.
Each smile she designs is deeply personal. “I take time to listen to their stories, understand their fears, and design a smile that fits not only their face but their personality and self-image,” Hazel shared. “The most satisfying aspect of my work is when a patient who once hid their teeth out of shame leaves the clinic smiling confidently, sometimes with tears of joy. That moment is priceless.”
As she continues to build her career in the UAE, Hazel remains grateful for the opportunities the country has given her. “Working in the UAE has provided me with tremendous opportunities for personal growth, professional advancement, and financial stability,” she said.
She values the multicultural environment and modern healthcare standards that allow her to thrive. “One of the main benefits is the chance to work in a multicultural environment, where I interact with patients and colleagues from different backgrounds, nationalities, and cultures. This diversity has helped me grow not only as a healthcare provider but also as a person,” she said. “Another important benefit is the high standard of healthcare and access to modern technology and facilities, especially in the field of aesthetic dentistry and smile design.”
Her success has also allowed her to fulfill her biggest motivation — supporting her son’s education abroad. “Financially, the UAE has allowed me to support my family and achieve my personal goals — most importantly, providing for my son’s education abroad, which has always been my main motivation,” she said.
As she looks ahead, Hazel is preparing for a new chapter — one that brings her dream full circle. She is set to open her own “Better You” Medical and Dental Aesthetics Center both in the UAE and in the Philippines.
“‘Better You’ will be more than just a clinic,” she explained with excitement. “It will be a space where patients feel safe, respected, and empowered — a place where smile design meets compassion, and where every treatment is personalized not just to improve appearance but to restore confidence and self-worth.”
For Hazel, the project represents both her growth and her gratitude. “Opening a branch in the Philippines is especially close to my heart. It’s my way of giving back to my roots and serving the community that shaped me,” she said. “I want to bring the same high standards of care and aesthetic excellence I’ve learned abroad to the people back home — especially those who may have never had access to advanced dental care.”
