Thailand’s Queen Mother Sirikit dies at 93

Thailand’s former Queen Sirikit, revered mother of King Maha Vajiralongkorn and widow of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, has passed away at the age of 93, the royal palace announced.

According to the statement released Saturday, “Her Majesty’s condition worsened until Friday and she passed away at 9:21 p.m. … at Chulalongkorn Hospital at age 93.”

Sirikit, who was deeply admired by many Thais, had been battling a blood infection since October 17. Despite continuous medical care, her condition deteriorated in recent days, leading to her passing.

She was married to King Bhumibol, Thailand’s longest-reigning monarch, who died in 2016 after seven decades on the throne. In her lifetime, Queen Sirikit was celebrated for her humanitarian work and her prominent role in national life during her husband’s reign.

The Thai royal family commands immense reverence across the kingdom, with Sirikit’s image—like those of her late husband and son—adorning public spaces and private homes throughout the nation.
