Thailand is launching an automated biometric system featuring facial recognition in six of its busiest airports, enabling travelers to use their physical ID only once at check-in, eliminating the need to present boarding passes throughout the airport journey.
Airports of Thailand (AOT) director Kirati Kitmanawat confirmed that the system will be available to domestic travelers starting Nov. 1 and for international travelers on Dec. 1. The participating airports include Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang/Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Hat Yai International Airports.
To access this streamlined process, passengers must permit access to their identification details at either the check-in counter or a self-service kiosk. The system will then electronically gather their biometric data and travel details, allowing them to proceed from baggage drop-off to boarding without further identity checks. Each registration applies to a single journey.
Kitmanawat highlighted that this upgrade is expected to minimize time spent on identity verification, giving travelers more time to enjoy the airport amenities. “AOT is dedicated to modernizing facilities to enhance passenger experiences,” he said, emphasizing their commitment to world-class service.
Data from AOT shows a sharp increase in passenger numbers, with the six airports accommodating 11.29 million passengers over the past year, marking a nearly 20% rise. This included 72.67 million international and 46.62 million domestic travelers, with most international arrivals coming from China, India, South Korea, Russia, and Japan. Additionally, flight traffic reached 732,690 flights, up by 14.5% year on year.
