Thai grandmother wakes up before funeral, claims she met a monk

An 85-year-old grandmother in Thailand shocked her family after unexpectedly regaining consciousness just before her funeral preparations, news outlet Khaosod Online reported.

Pua Sriphueng, from Buriram Province, was found unresponsive for nearly an hour, prompting her granddaughter, Sommai Dee-la-at, to assume she had passed away. After unsuccessful attempts to wake her, the family called relatives to bid their final goodbyes.

Dee-la-at then arranged for a rescue team to transport Sriphueng’s body to a temple for religious rites. However, 40 minutes later, she suddenly woke up, leaving her family and neighbors in disbelief.

Sriphueng later shared that during her time “away,” she encountered a monk who came to guide her. Since regaining consciousness, her behavior has noticeably changed, resembling that of a child—becoming cranky, wanting to be held, and craving sweets.

Her family believes her good deeds in life led to her “rebirth.” As a sign of gratitude, they invited monks for chants and alms-giving in their home.

Despite the shocking incident, Sriphueng is reportedly in good physical condition and continues to live alone, with her granddaughter visiting regularly.
