Teen undergoes life-changing surgery to remove rare jaw tumor in Dubai

A 14-year-old Arab teenager, has been given a fresh start after a successful surgery at Medcare Dentofaces in Dubai to remove a rare and benign tumor from his lower jaw. The life-changing procedure not only restored his ability to eat and speak comfortably but also prevented potential long-term complications.

For years, Salem Salah endured persistent swelling and severe pain in his lower jaw. As the condition worsened, it affected his ability to chew properly and caused visible disfigurement, prompting his family to seek help. Multiple consultations revealed that Salem was suffering from Ameloblastic Fibroma, a rare benign tumor originating from dental tissue, which required specialized treatment.

The family was referred to Dr. Farzin Sarkarat, a specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeon, who identified the tumor’s proximity to a critical nerve as a significant challenge. “The position of the swelling was dangerously close to the inferior alveolar nerve, responsible for sensations in the lower teeth, chin, and lip. Any mistake could have resulted in permanent nerve damage,” explained Dr. Farzin.

Dr. Farzin and his team devised a meticulous treatment plan to remove the tumor and restore the structure of Salem’s jaw. The complex three-hour surgery involved removing the tumor and an impacted wisdom tooth, repositioning the nerve, and inserting a bone plate to reconstruct the jaw.

“We carefully removed the tumor while preserving the nerve, ensuring Salem could regain full jaw functionality,” said Dr. Farzin. The operation was a success, significantly reducing Salem’s pain and swelling.

Salem’s recovery has been smooth, and his family is relieved. “We are extremely thankful to Dr. Farzin and his team for their incredible care and expertise,” said Salem’s sister, Ms. Shaikha Elfalasi. “Seeing my brother recover and smile again is a great blessing for our family.”
