Teacher dies amid claims of stress from school principal’s reprimand, DepEd investigates

The Department of Education (DepEd) in Davao de Oro is currently investigating the death of Marjorie Espinosa Llanto-Bonto, a teacher at Tibagon Elementary School in the Panutukan North District, who allegedly passed away due to stress after being reprimanded by her school principal.

In a statement issued on September 22, DepEd-Davao de Oro expressed its condolences to the family of Llanto-Bonto. The department vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. “DepEd-Davao de Oro assures the public that it will thoroughly conduct an investigation on the cause of her death,” the statement read.

The incident reportedly began when one of Llanto-Bonto’s students sustained a head injury after hitting a chair while dancing in class. The injured student did not receive immediate first aid, as Llanto-Bonto allegedly had a fear of blood. The student’s mother later complained to the principal, leading to a confrontation with the teacher.

In a group chat with parents, Llanto-Bonto expressed her distress over the principal’s scolding, describing it as humiliating and overwhelming. “Muntik akong mamatay kahapon dahil hindi ko na matiis ang pang-iinsulto ni sir (principal) sa akin,” she wrote. She lamented how her years of dedication as a teacher felt invalidated by the incident.

According to the student’s mother, she sought clarification from the school about why her son was sent home instead of receiving proper medical attention. She confirmed that the principal did reprimand Llanto-Bonto but denied witnessing any verbal abuse or finger-pointing during the meeting.

DepEd 11 spokesperson Jenielito Atillo stated that the investigation would include looking into the principal’s actions. The department is committed to ensuring that the investigation will bring clarity and justice to the situation.
