Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has shared heartfelt insights about Pope Leo XIV, urging Filipino Catholics to offer their love and prayers to the newly elected pontiff.
Speaking at a press conference at the Pontificio Collegio Filippino, Tagle revealed that Pope Leo XIV, whose real name is Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, is a familiar figure to the Philippines, having visited the country several times as the superior general of the Order of St. Augustine. “He has fond memories of the Philippines,” Tagle emphasized, adding, “Sana mabigyan natin ng karampatang pagmamahal, panalangin.” (I hope we can give him enough love and prayers.)
Reflecting on his experience with the new pope during the congregations before the conclave, Tagle described him as a “very level-headed person” who is not driven by impulsive reactions but by careful discernment. He even shared a lighthearted detail about the pontiff’s personality. “If tumawa siya napalakas!” (When he laughs, it’s loud!), Tagle recalled, describing Pope Leo XIV as “very human.”
The Filipino cardinal also highlighted how the Philippines has set a benchmark for papal visits, noting how Pope John Paul II’s World Youth Day in 1995 drew over five million people, a record surpassed by Pope Francis’ visit to Leyte in 2015, which saw around six million attendees.
Cardinal Jose Advincula, Archbishop of Manila, also spoke at the event, pointing out that the new pope’s choice of the name “Leo” was inspired by Pope Leo XIII, known for his strong social teachings. “He does not forget what is happening around,” Advincula emphasized, signaling that Pope Leo XIV is expected to lead with a focus on social issues alongside spiritual guidance.
Meanwhile, Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David of Kalookan reminded the faithful to support one another, especially with the arrival of a new pope who will serve as a model leader. He also expressed hope that Pope Leo XIV will continue the legacy of Pope Francis, a pontiff known for his compassion and mercy.
“This is going to be a good papacy,” David said, expressing optimism for the Church under Pope Leo XIV’s leadership.
