Yale University is set to introduce Tagalog language courses as early as the fall semester of 2025, marking a significant step in promoting Filipino culture and language in U.S. higher education. The move comes after the success of Harvard University, which began offering its first Tagalog language course in 2023.
The Council on Southeast Asia Studies at Yale has posted a job opening for a full-time Filipino language instructor, with plans to start classes in Fall 2025. This initiative follows a petition from the Filipino student group “Kasama,” which garnered over 380 signatures from students and faculty, advocating for the inclusion of Tagalog in the university’s language programs.
The selected instructor will be responsible for teaching both elementary and intermediate levels of Filipino, focusing on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Applications for the position are open until September 11, 2025, on the Chronicle Jobs portal.
