Taal releases 4,409 tons of sulfur dioxide following phreatomagmatic activity

Taal Volcano in Batangas released 4,409 tons of sulfur dioxide on Monday, January 6, following a minor phreatomagmatic eruption, according to a report from Inquirer.net, citing the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Philvolcs reported a steady increase in sulfur dioxide emissions from Sunday, January 5, when the volcano discharged 3,035 tons, to Monday, with an earlier emission of 4,616 tons. The minor eruption at 7:34 p.m. created a weak 600-meter-high plume that drifted southwest and triggered a three-minute volcanic tremor.

In the past 24 hours, Phivolcs recorded seven volcanic earthquakes, including five volcanic tremors lasting between four to 15 minutes. A weak volcanic tremor that began on January 4 continued until January 6.

Despite the activity, Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1, indicating low-level unrest. Phivolcs continues to monitor the situation closely.
