Syrian woman sentenced to 10 years in Dubai for drug possession

Dubai’s Criminal Court has sentenced a 37-year-old Syrian woman to 10 years in prison and a Dh100,000 fine after she was found in possession of illegal drugs near Al Qiyadah Metro Station.

According to a Khaleej Times report, the arrest took place on April 15 last year after Dubai Police’s anti-narcotics unit received a tip-off about her involvement with crystal meth. Officers apprehended her around 8 PM as she arrived in a white Ford Mustang. A search of the vehicle uncovered 25.29 grams of liquid methamphetamine in a plastic bottle and 1.26 grams of crystal meth wrapped in five plastic packets. Drug consumption tools, including pipes and a lighter, were also seized.

A forensic analysis confirmed traces of amphetamine and methamphetamine in her urine. During questioning, she admitted to purchasing the drugs via WhatsApp, transferring Dh500 to a local bank account, and receiving instructions for pick-up through the app.

Her defense argued inconsistencies in the reported drug weight, but the court ruled that the discrepancy was due to gross and net weight differences, which did not invalidate the evidence.

Based on Federal Law No. 30 of 2021, the court imposed the maximum penalty for possession of 20 to 100 grams of methamphetamine. In addition to her sentence, she will be deported after serving her term. If she fails to pay the fine, she will serve an additional day in jail for every Dh100 unpaid.
