Dubai Police successfully averted a potentially catastrophic accident on Sheikh Zayed Road after a vehicle’s cruise control malfunctioned, leaving the driver helpless, Gulf News reported.
The incident unfolded when the driver, realizing something was amiss, promptly called the emergency number 999. Dubai Police responded swiftly, collaborating with the Command and Control Centre to manage the situation effectively.
Traffic patrols quickly located the malfunctioning vehicle and implemented a coordinated plan to bring it to a safe stop. One patrol car reached the driver within minutes, while another positioned itself ahead of the vehicle to gradually slow it down. This prompt action prevented what could have been a horrific accident, as the driver had lost control of the car.
Brigadier Juma Salem bin Suwaidan, Deputy Director of the General Department of Traffic, recounted the events, stating, “The traffic patrols were immediately dispatched to Sheikh Zayed Road. When they spotted the vehicle past the Expo Bridge, they quickly secured the area around it and activated warning signs for other motorists. They then worked to reassure the visibly distressed driver. One of the patrols then positioned themselves in front of the vehicle and began gradually bringing it to a stop, while the other patrols secured the lane behind it.”
What to do when cruise control fails
Brig. bin Suwaidan emphasized the importance of remaining calm in such situations. He advised drivers to fasten their seatbelts, turn on hazard lights and headlights, and promptly contact the emergency number 999 to report the issue.
Drivers were also advised to shift the transmission to neutral (N), turn off the engine, and restart it immediately. If this doesn’t resolve the problem, they should apply firm, constant pressure on the brakes until the vehicle stops. Additionally, releasing the handbrake gradually while maintaining control of the steering wheel is recommended. If these steps fail, drivers should alternate between neutral (N) and drive (D) to regain control.
Brig. bin Suwaidan concluded by urging drivers to move their vehicle off the road safely if any of these methods work before the arrival of traffic patrols.
