Sudden swerving remains top cause of road accidents in the UAE

Sudden swerving has been identified as the leading cause of traffic accidents across the UAE in 2024, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Interior. Authorities recorded 827 incidents linked to sudden lane changes throughout the year.

Distraction while driving was the second most common cause, resulting in 776 accidents during the same period. Officials said around 66 different causes of road accidents were documented last year, including negligence, running red lights, and failure to yield at pedestrian crossings.

Dubai saw the highest number of sudden swerving incidents with 676 cases, followed by Abu Dhabi with 52, while Fujairah recorded 51.

In terms of distracted driving, Abu Dhabi topped the list with 510 accidents, followed by Sharjah with 188 and Dubai with 76 cases.

Negligence and inattention also contributed to 455 accidents across the country. Dubai accounted for more than half of these cases with 241, while Abu Dhabi followed with 77.

The Ministry continues to remind drivers to stay focused, follow traffic rules, and prioritize road safety to help reduce accidents and save lives.
