After a commanding start in the 33rd Dubai International Basketball Championship, Strong Group Athletics (SGA) is gearing up for their second match against Syria’s Al Wahda Sports Club. The team, under the seasoned leadership of Coach Charles Tiu, is looking to build on their initial victory where they clinched a convincing 82-66 win against the UAE national team.
In their debut game, SGA showcased a blend of strategic prowess and athletic brilliance. The match began with a competitive edge, concluding the first quarter at a 22-all tie. However, SGA’s tactical gameplay became evident as they secured a six-point advantage by halftime. The third quarter witnessed a spectacular display of teamwork and skill, particularly from Andre Roberson and Kevin Quiambao, who led a dominant 14-2 run. This included Quiambao’s back-to-back 3-pointers and Roberson’s swift layups, significantly tipping the scales in SGA’s favor.
The team’s momentum didn’t falter, with their lead swelling to 21 points following Allen Liwag’s impressive turnaround jumper. Although the UAE team attempted a comeback, reducing the deficit to 11 points, Jordan Heading’s decisive layup in the closing minutes solidified SGA’s triumph.
Standout performances were numerous, with Andre Roberson delivering an all-around performance of 15 points, 16 rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Dwight Howard and Kevin Quiambao were instrumental in the victory, contributing significantly in points and rebounds.
Looking ahead, SGA is scheduled to face Homenetmen on January 21, followed by Beirut on January 23, and concluding their elimination round against Al Ahly Tripoli on January 24.
The team, a blend of NBA veterans like Dwight Howard and Andray Blatche, and rising stars from the Philippine collegiate scene, showcases the synergy of experience and youthful energy. With the strategic input from Coach Charles Tiu, Assistant Coach Topex Robinson, and Team Consultant Brian Goorjian, SGA is a formidable contender in the championship.
