A 35-year-old woman, identified as Mary Ann Tangpos, and her newborn baby tragically died after she gave birth on the sidewalk along General Maxilom Avenue in Cebu City on the morning of August 14, 2024.
Tangpos, who lived on the streets with her partner Sherwen Sumagang and their seven other children, reportedly began experiencing contractions late on the night of August 13. Despite her partner’s attempt to bring her to the hospital, Tangpos refused, citing financial constraints.
Early the next morning, a friend named Marie Seno found Tangpos in labor on the sidewalk, with her family nowhere in sight. Traffic enforcer Sheila Nicolasora and a passing nurse quickly assisted in delivering the baby, but the infant was already lifeless when born.
According to a CDN report, Tangpos was taken to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, where she initially refused treatment and signed a waiver to be discharged. Sadly, she succumbed to severe blood loss shortly after being returned to the street where she had given birth.
Her partner and children arrived moments too late, finding Tangpos already deceased on the sidewalk. Authorities believe excessive bleeding led to her death.
