Stars, fans pay tribute to Nora Aunor’s enduring legacy in film and culture

Tributes have flooded social media following the death of Philippine film icon and National Artist Nora Aunor, who passed away at 71.

Her son, Ian De Leon, confirmed the news in a heartfelt Facebook post on Wednesday night. “She was the heart of our family—a source of unconditional love, strength, and warmth. Her kindness, wisdom, and beautiful spirit touched everyone who knew her. She will be missed beyond words and remembered forever,” he wrote.

Ian added that further details will be released on Thursday. In a separate post, he expressed his deep love for his mother: “We love you Ma.. alam ng Diyos kung gano ka namin ka mahal.. pahinga ka na po Ma.. nandito ka lang sa puso at isipan namin.”

Actress Matet De Leon, another child of the late star, posted a photo with Nora from her wedding on Instagram with a simple but emotional caption: “I love you mommy.” Fellow celebrities and fans quickly offered their condolences, including actress Claudine Barretto, who commented, “Condolence Matet. Andito lang si Ate. Mahal kita. Mahigpit na yakap.”

Nora Aunor was named a National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts in 2022, a recognition that cemented her legacy in Philippine culture. Her unforgettable performances in films like Himala, The Flor Contemplacion Story, Minsa’y Isang Gamu-gamo, Bulaklak sa City Jail, and Thy Womb earned her critical acclaim and a devoted following across generations.

Just last week, her former in-law, Pilita Corrales—mother of Ramon Christopher Gutierrez, ex-husband of Lotlot De Leon—also passed away at 87.
