Spotify listeners will soon be able to connect more directly through music, as the streaming giant begins rolling out its new in-app messaging feature this week.
“Messages are a fast and convenient way to share and chat about what you’re listening to with the people you care about,” Spotify said in its announcement.
The update, available on mobile for both free and premium users aged 16 and up in select markets, allows one-on-one conversations where tracks, podcasts, and other content can be sent and discussed. Replies can include both text and emojis.
Spotify emphasized that the feature is not meant to replace existing messaging apps but rather to enhance the way fans interact over music. “As always, you should continue sharing Spotify content directly through your favorite platforms like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, TikTok, and more,” the company said.
The new tool also aims to boost discovery for artists and creators. “Messages also open up new opportunities for artists, authors, and creators—more users can spread the word about an artist’s track or creator’s podcast with their friends and family, helping drive discovery,” Spotify explained.
To address privacy concerns, Spotify assured users that conversations are protected with industry-standard encryption. The platform will also use proactive detection systems to scan for harmful or unlawful content, with moderators reviewing reported cases.
