South Korea introduces Hallyu visa for K-pop and K-drama fans

South Korea is set to launch a unique Hallyu visa, designed specifically for fans of K-pop and K-dramas. This visa will enable foreign enthusiasts of Korean culture to live in the country for up to two years. As reported by Forbes, to be eligible for this visa, applicants are required to enroll in performing arts academies within South Korea.

The Hallyu visa program aims to provide opportunities for non-Koreans to immerse themselves in the nation’s vibrant culture and entertainment sectors. This initiative is also part of South Korea’s strategy to revive its tourism industry, which was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A 2023 report from South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism highlighted K-pop as the primary attraction for tourists visiting the country. The popularity of Korean content is evident, with a substantial increase in mentions in the Philippines from 30,114 monthly in 2020 to 115,385 in 2022.

Under its business plan, the Ministry has identified “arts, driver of K-culture for the next generation” as a key focus, signaling increased support for young artists and art students. Further details about the Hallyu visa, including application requirements and key dates, are anticipated to be announced in the second half of 2024.

Google’s recognition of K-pop groups BLACKPINK and BTS as the most searched music groups in its 25-year history underscores the global influence of K-pop. Furthermore, a 2020 study by the Ministry projected that BTS’ hit “Dynamite” could contribute $1.43 billion to South Korea’s economy and create 8,000 jobs, showcasing the significant economic impact of the Korean entertainment industry.
