Sixty-year-old British adventurer Neil Laughton has broken the record for the highest-altitude cycle ride, pedaling a foldable Brompton bike at the summit of Putha Huinchuli, a 7,246-meter peak in Nepal. Laughton, a former Royal Marine Commando, rode and carried the bike alongside Sherpa Nima Kanchla to the snow-covered peak.
After several days of climbing, Laughton completed a short 20-meter ride at the summit, surpassing the previous record of 7,211 meters set in 2009. Despite challenging conditions, including deep snow and tricky terrain, Laughton successfully set the Guinness World Record.
In preparation for the feat, he trained by carrying the bike on an inclined treadmill while wearing an oxygen mask to simulate high-altitude conditions. Laughton’s adventure also raised funds for the Tenzing Norgay School in Karakot, Nepal. This is his second world record, having hosted the highest dinner party on Mount Everest in 2018.
