Aster Hospital Al Qusais, a globally recognized medical facility, has restored confidence to a 42-year-old single mother from Congo through a successful ocular prosthesis surgery. The procedure, led by Dr. Faizan Mehmood, Specialist in Ophthalmology (Orbit and Oculoplasty), provided Ms. Kitsoukou Tiana Fredy Karmen a new lease on life after living with vision loss and facial disfigurement in her left eye for over a year.
Ms. Karmen’s condition developed unexpectedly after an abdominal surgery led to staphyloma—a rare condition causing the cornea to stretch and bulge, resulting in blindness and significant disfigurement. The challenges of her condition deeply affected her daily life and self-esteem, making her search for a solution more urgent.
Through extensive research, she found hope at Aster Hospital Al Qusais. Dr. Mehmood and his team crafted a comprehensive plan to address her condition. The treatment began with an intricate procedure to implant an orbital ball, restoring the eye’s natural shape and preparing for the fitting of a custom prosthetic.
“The primary goal of the surgery was to create a stable base for the prosthetic while preserving the eye’s motility for synchronized movement,” said Dr. Mehmood.
Two months later, Ms. Karmen received a bespoke prosthetic eye, significantly enhancing her appearance and emotional well-being. While the prosthesis does not restore vision, it has greatly improved her quality of life.
Expressing her gratitude, Ms. Karmen shared, “I feel more confident and hopeful about the future. The care I received was exceptional, and I can’t thank Dr. Faizan and the team enough for transforming my life.”
