She became a mom in her teens, but this Filipina later rose in Dubai as a marketer and entrepreneur

A life can change in an instant, sometimes at the very moment a person believes their path is already set. For Maria Fatima Garcia Mariano, that twist came the day she stepped off a plane in Dubai in 2021, expecting nothing more than a short business trip. Within months, the city she barely knew became the birthplace of a new chapter—one shaped by faith, resilience, and a sense of purpose far greater than she ever anticipated.

Finding strength in unexpected beginnings

Maria Fatima arrived in Dubai just after the pandemic, ready to spend three months supporting a work project. She never imagined staying longer, let alone rebuilding her life from the ground up. Yet, as she settled in, she felt something she couldn’t ignore—a quiet conviction that this place, miles away from her daughter and everything familiar, was where something bigger was unfolding. “I arrived in Dubai in June 2021… for what was supposed to be a simple three-month business trip. But God had a different plan,” she shared with TGFM.

Long before she became a marketing professional, entrepreneur, and MBA graduate, her story had already been marked by a defining chapter. She became a mother at 16, a moment that many assumed would limit her future. Instead, it became the source of her strength. “Many would think that was the end of dreams—but with God, even the broken pieces become the foundation of a new story,” she said. Her daughter became her anchor, her motivation, and the reason she pushed forward through hardships that could have stopped her in her tracks.

Today, she balances a thriving corporate career and entrepreneurial ventures with grace and grit. As part of the Marketing and Business Development team at Graniti Building Materials, Maria Fatima manages collaborations, strengthens industry relationships, and represents the company in meetings with designers, contractors, and developers. Her outdoor-driven, people-centered role energizes her. It also challenges her to grow in ways she never expected. One of her proudest milestones is consistently achieving 80–100 collaborations per year, a performance that reflects her dedication to relationship-building. “Seeing the fruits of my effort, teamwork, and faith is something I will always be grateful for,” she shared.

At the same time, she nurtures her entrepreneurial side through Luxe for Less by Meztisang Marketera and Luxe Skin & Scents by Mestizas, businesses that began with late-night live selling and slowly evolved into something sustainable. With encouragement from her fiancé, she took the bold step of reinvesting her savings to build a small trading company—an endeavor that grew alongside her corporate responsibilities.

Along the journey, she celebrated meaningful milestones, including passing her UAE driving test on her first attempt. It may seem like a small victory to some, but for her, it symbolized the confidence she never thought she could reclaim.

Amid work and business, she also pursued higher learning. Balancing motherhood, employment, entrepreneurship, and graduate school was strenuous, but she pushed through. “There were nights I cried out of exhaustion… but every time, the Lord renewed my strength,” she shared. Recently, she celebrated another achievement: completing her MBA in Sales and Marketing Management.

A calling shaped by love, sacrifice, and faith

If asked why she chose to stay abroad, the answer comes without hesitation: her daughter. “I work overseas because I love my daughter and family with all my heart,” she said. As a young mother, she learned quickly what responsibility meant, and it still drives her today. When she first stepped into Dubai, she felt a stirring—a sense that she was being led into a season of growth. “It was as if the Lord was quietly telling me, ‘This is where I will build you.’”

Every sacrifice, every moment of homesickness, every quiet night spent missing her child became part of her purpose. Growing up separated by distance wasn’t easy for either of them, but Maria Fatima held onto the hope that everything she was working for would eventually pave the way for a better life.

Before becoming an OFW, she had built a solid foundation back home. She spent over ten years in the Philippine real estate industry, working as a property consultant and eventually becoming a licensed real estate broker. These years shaped her discipline and strengthened her ability to build trust with clients, preparing her for the opportunities waiting abroad.

Today, she continues to balance both corporate and entrepreneurial pursuits. She creates content when she can, handles their small trading business, and ensures that her spiritual life remains non-negotiable. Weekly church and twice-monthly Bible studies in her home anchor her. “It’s my way of giving back, of staying anchored, and of reminding myself that everything I have is because of Him,” she explained.

Overcoming struggles that shaped her growth

Her success abroad hides the emotional weight she carried silently in her early months. Homesickness hit harder than she expected. “There were nights I cried quietly, missing my daughter so much that my heart physically hurt,” she admitted. The guilt of being away and the pressure to succeed were battles she fought quietly.

Professionally, she faced challenges too. Coming from a decade of real estate experience, she assumed the transition would be smoother. Instead, she had to navigate new industries, new expectations, and an unfamiliar market. She questioned herself, wondered if she made the right choice, and struggled with the high cost of living. But she pushed forward, learning resilience with each setback.

Her support system kept her grounded. Her fiancé, who believed in her dreams; her daughter, who reminded her of her purpose; and her faith community, who helped sustain her spiritually. Above all, she leaned on her faith. “He was my strength when I had none,” she said of Jesus. “He was my comfort when loneliness felt heavy.”

Looking ahead with purpose and vision

As she reflects on her future, Maria Fatima sees her overseas journey as only one chapter of a much bigger story. She dreams of a time when she, her fiancé, and her daughter can live under one roof again. She hopes to expand their trading business beyond the UAE and into other regions, including the US.

Real estate remains close to her heart, and she envisions returning with broader experience and a stronger sense of leadership. She also plans to build passive income streams through properties, possibly running a farm, rest house, or café—ventures that blend business with passion.

More importantly, giving back remains a calling. She hopes to continue serving through ministry, hosting Bible studies, and keeping her home a space for fellowship. She also carries a desire to mentor single mothers and OFWs, drawing from her own journey to uplift others who feel limited by their past or their circumstances.

Words of encouragement for fellow OFWs

To kababayans abroad, she shares wisdom shaped by real struggles and real victories. “Put God first in everything,” she emphasized. She also encourages others to protect their hearts, be wise with finances, choose their circle carefully, and never be ashamed of small beginnings.

Her message is a reminder that hardships do not diminish one’s worth. “You are strong, brave, and loved,” she says. “Your sacrifices are seen, your tears are counted, and your dreams matter.”
