Sharjah’s 4-day work week improves student behaviour and teacher satisfaction, survey shows

The benefits of Sharjah’s 4-day work week were highlighted at the inaugural Regional Data and Community Development Forum on Wednesday, showcasing improvements in both student engagement and teacher well-being.

According to a survey shared during the session “4-Day Work Week – Data Settles the Productivity Debate,” Sharjah schools reported reduced behavioural problems, higher attendance, and increased student motivation since the work week was shortened. Teachers also noted better work-life balance, with 87% saying the extra day off allowed them time for personal activities like going to the gym.

The survey, conducted in February 2023 among 40,000 parents and employees, revealed that 91% of teachers felt their work-life balance had improved, and 95% of students had better attendance. Parents also reported a noticeable reduction in behavioural issues at home.

Since Sharjah adopted the 4-day work week in January 2022, the emirate has seen a 90% job satisfaction rate. Global companies exploring similar initiatives have observed a 20% increase in productivity, according to the forum’s organisers.

Speakers at the forum, including Sharjah Private Education Authority chairperson Dr. Muhadditha Yahya Al Hashimi, noted in a Khaleej Times report that both students and teachers have benefited from the more flexible schedule, with improvements in overall happiness and well-being.
