Sharjah’s Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has announced a new initiative to tackle traffic congestion using artificial intelligence (AI). The SRTA is set to implement 48 AI-enhanced traffic signals across the emirate, with the aim of improving traffic flow by up to 30 per cent.
These advanced signals will utilize sensors and cameras to continuously analyze real-time traffic conditions, allowing for dynamic adjustments to signal timings. Yousif Alathmani, Chairman of the SRTA, explained that the duration of green and red lights will be determined based on traffic volume and trends. Importantly, the AI system will undergo continuous learning and updates to enhance its effectiveness.
In 2023, the SRTA successfully completed two projects on Ittihad Road and in the Al Taawun area, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion between Sharjah and Dubai.
Furthermore, the SRTA recently partnered with BEEAH to enhance electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure throughout Sharjah.
