Sharjah to auction off impounded cars left unclaimed for 3 months

Sharjah authorities have introduced a major amendment to how long impounded vehicles can be held before being sold at public auction.

The update was announced during the Executive Council meeting on Tuesday morning, chaired by His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. The session, held at the Ruler’s Office, was also attended by His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem Al Qasimi and Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, both Deputy Rulers and Vice Chairmen of the Executive Council.

Among the key agenda items was the revision of Resolution No. (3) of 2016, which previously governed the retention and release of impounded vehicles in the emirate.

What’s new?

Under the newly approved amendment, vehicles impounded for three months or longer without any action from their owners or lienholders may now be disposed of through public auction. This shift is part of broader efforts to improve operational efficiency and reduce clutter from unclaimed vehicles.

The Committee for the Disposal of Impounded Vehicles will now oversee the sale of vehicles confiscated by police due to traffic or criminal violations. Sales will proceed only after three months from the closure of the case file or the issuance of a court ruling, and will be done in coordination with the Public Prosecution.

This move aligns with Sharjah’s ongoing goal to enhance government performance and align regulations with the emirate’s strategic vision.
