Dubai Police has issued a warning about the potential dangers of sharing personal information with Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications such as ChatGPT. In a Gulf News report, Major Abdullah Al Sheihi, Acting Director of the Cyber Crime Department at Dubai Police, highlighted the risks users face when they rely too heavily on AI chatbots for personal tasks.
While these tools are widely used for research, email writing, and more, Al Sheihi emphasized the privacy risks associated with AI. “Users perceive AI as a trustworthy virtual companion, but this technology’s memory and analytical capabilities pose significant future risks,” he said. Sharing private information with such applications could expose users to privacy violations, especially if sensitive data is involved.
Al Sheihi also raised concerns about over-reliance on AI, warning that it could diminish critical thinking, particularly among young users. He added that AI has been linked to cybercrimes like hacking and fraud, and urged caution when using such technologies.
Though no specific incidents of misuse involving AI chatbots have been reported, Major Al Sheihi acknowledged the potential for future issues as the use of AI continues to grow. He called for responsible AI use, particularly in verifying facts from multiple sources and avoiding over-dependence on these applications for personal and professional tasks.
