Senator Angara open to Department of Education chief post if offered

Senator Sonny Angara has expressed his openness to assuming the role of Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) should President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. offer him the position.

“Opo, open naman tayo kung sakaling pinagkatiwalaan,” Angara said, though he clarified that there has been no official offer yet. Angara is currently serving his second consecutive term in the Senate.

The position of DepEd chief will become vacant on July 19 following Vice President Sara Duterte’s decision to resign from the Marcos cabinet.

Several of Angara’s colleagues in the Senate have recently voiced their support for him to take up the role. Senate President Francis Escudero, along with Senators JV Ejercito, Migz Zubiri, Joel Villanueva, and Sherwin Gatchalian, have all endorsed Angara for the position.

“Lubos tayong nagpapasalamat sa ating mga kasamahan sa kanilang vote of confidence,” Angara remarked, expressing his gratitude for their support.

However, the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition has earlier stated that the next DepEd chief should not be a “political figure” to prevent the politicization of the department.
