Senate bet Honasan calls VP impeachment bid a ‘waste of time and resources’

Former senator Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan expressed his agreement with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s stance that efforts to impeach the vice president would be a “waste of time and resources.” Honasan urged leaders to focus on the country’s pressing concerns instead.

“Aren’t there more important issues and problems to attend to? Any issue now we can relate to the real problems in our country—food, clothing, shelter, education,” he said in a GMA News Online report.

Honasan also raised concerns about the potential impact of the impeachment efforts on national unity, especially with the upcoming May elections. “Is this going to unite the country? I don’t think so. Dahil lalo na on the eve of the coming May elections where we should be listening to platforms and programs of the candidates,” he remarked.

A former military officer who led failed coups against the Corazon Aquino administration, Honasan dismissed the idea of another People Power movement. He warned that continued political instability could drive investors away.

“Hindi na kailangan na umabot sa gan’un at habang maaga magkaisa na tayo, political will at asikasuhin na natin ‘yung mga totoong problema. Hindi ‘yung problemang dala lamang ng politika,” he emphasized.

Honasan, who ran under the Marcos-Duterte “UniTeam” in the 2022 elections, is now seeking office under the Reform PH People’s Party.
