Senator Robinhood Padilla is poised to become the next president of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP), according to Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino. Although the official election of party officials has not yet occurred, Padilla is the leading candidate for the role, with former President Rodrigo Duterte continuing as party chairman. Tolentino shared these details on “Anong Ganap?” on Teleradyo Serbisyo.
“Sen. Robinhood Padilla is set to be the next PDP president. He’s not up for reelection, so his position is more stable,” Tolentino stated.
Among the four PDP members in the Senate, Tolentino, and Senators Ronald dela Rosa and Bong Go are anticipated to seek reelection in the 2025 midterm elections. Despite Padilla’s anticipated presidency, formal elections are still required to finalize his position. Currently, Padilla serves as PDP’s executive vice president, a role he resigned from in May 2023 to concentrate on his senatorial duties.
The current president of PDP is Palawan Representative Jose Alvarez. Earlier this year, Alvarez expressed support for Tacloban Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez to remain as Speaker, despite criticism from Duterte. Additionally, Alvarez advised against involving PDP in Duterte’s call for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to take a drug test, following allegations of illegal drug use.
