Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that self-driving taxis will be available for hailing in Dubai by December 2030. The declaration came during the Dubai World Congress for Self-Driving Transport.
After extensive planning and recent months of digital mapping, the vision of driverless taxis in Dubai is coming to fruition. The taxis will commence trial runs in the Jumeirah 1 district starting October 1. However, for safety precautions, passengers will not be permitted on board until the final safety tests are completed.
The taxis are designed with cutting-edge technology to ensure a safe and smooth ride. Each vehicle will be equipped with 80 sensors, cameras, and LiDAR systems – a light detection and ranging technology. This advanced setup will enable the taxis to scan and monitor road conditions continuously and employ controls to avoid collisions, even with objects not visible to the human eye.
The ambitious goal set by the RTA is for 25% of mobility journeys in Dubai to be driverless by the year 2030.
