Balancing passion with profession is a rare feat, especially for those working far from home. But for Martin P. Sumpay Jr., a 45-year-old Security Analyst based in Saudi Arabia, this balance is not only possible—it’s the core of his journey. For two decades, he has built a meaningful life abroad, thriving in his corporate career while also nurturing his artistic soul and giving back to the Filipino community.
Currently working at the King Abdullah Financial District Development and Management Company (KAFD), Martin ensures the safety of one of Riyadh’s most significant developments. “I focus on safeguarding our assets and ensuring a secure environment,” he shared with TGFM. But behind the serious title is a man who once started his journey abroad as an administrative assistant, with nothing but a strong desire to provide a better future for his family.
A leap of faith that paid off
Martin’s story as an overseas worker began in February 2005 when he took a job as an Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Al Jawal STC Company. Like many Filipinos, he left the country with hopes of earning more and providing for his loved ones. “The primary motivation for working overseas has been to earn more than I could in the Philippines, enabling me to support my family’s growing needs, especially in providing them with quality education,” he shared.
His career took a defining turn when he became the CEO Office Manager at Hala Payments Company. “Serving as the CEO Office Manager for two years was a major highlight. I gained invaluable experience working closely with top executives, and it really enhanced my productivity and confidence,” he recalled. The exposure prepared him for bigger challenges and gave him insights into leadership and operations.
Now, as a seasoned professional with more than 14 years of security-related experience—including a long stint at the Saudi American Bank—Martin brings his expertise in operations, policy-making, and monitoring to the forefront. “I’ve developed policies that include KPIs and SLAs in collaboration with stakeholders. This role lets me apply everything I’ve learned through the years,” he added.
More than just a job
But Martin’s life abroad is not just about the corporate ladder. He is also known for his vibrant presence in Filipino events, especially as a singer. “I’m proud to be one of the in-house performers for Western Union marketing events in Riyadh. I also perform at Fiestahan Restaurant and other Filipino gatherings,” he said. His voice isn’t just a hobby—it’s a way to give back.
In fact, Martin organized four major charity concerts aimed at helping fellow Filipinos in need. “I’m a social advocate, and I use my talent to raise funds and support our kababayans,” he said. Through music and community engagement, he has made a lasting impact, not just as an OFW, but as a Filipino who uplifts others.
In recognition of his efforts, he was honored with the Excellence in Musical Talent and Community Entertainment Award at The Global Filipino Icon Awards 2025 held in Dubai on April 5, 2025.
From struggles to strength
Martin’s journey hasn’t been without trials. At one point, he battled depression, a reality many overseas workers face in silence. “I never thought I would experience depression, but it happened,” he admitted. “During that time, my Saudi boss and his family allowed me to stay in their home. They treated me not as an employee, but as a brother. That kind of kindness is something I will always be grateful for.”
His experience taught him the value of having a strong support system and the importance of finding people who genuinely care. “It made a significant impact on my life, and I truly admire him for that,” he said of his former boss.
Despite the emotional battles, Martin emerged stronger, motivated by his purpose and his faith. “To my fellow kababayans, stay focused on your goals. Struggles are normal, but if you persevere, a better life awaits. Always pray to God for guidance. Trust that everything will fall into place,” he advised.
Looking ahead, Martin plans to return home and build a small business, possibly a rest house, where he can spend more time with his children and granddaughter. “I want to create a nurturing space for my family after all these years,” he said.
For Martin, success is not defined by titles or accolades, but by the lives he’s touched, the family he’s supported, and the community he’s inspired—both through his work and his music. “I’d like to express my deepest gratitude for recognizing me and my contributions to society. Mabuhay po kayo and God bless you in your future endeavors,” he ended with a heartfelt message.
