Vice President Sara Duterte has urged those who want to support the Office of the Vice President (OVP) through donations to instead direct their resources towards helping communities affected by Tropical Storm Enteng.
Duterte emphasized that while her office appreciates the support, she believes it is more important for donors to prioritize their own families’ needs or to assist those who have been impacted by the storm. “Due to the onslaught of Enteng, we encourage those who want to donate something to just give it to our countrymen who were greatly affected by the rains and floods,” Duterte said. “Any help to alleviate what they are going through and to help them get back on their feet would be greatly appreciated.”
She also highlighted the need for individuals to focus on their own necessities amid rising prices of basic goods. “It is more important to prioritize your own needs and the welfare of your families,” Duterte added.
The call for donations comes as the OVP’s proposed budget of P2.037 billion for the next year is under scrutiny in Congress. During Senate discussions, Senator Risa Hontiveros noted that a significant portion of the OVP’s budget is allocated for socio-economic programs that are similar to those run by other government agencies. This led to a heated exchange between the senator and the vice president.
Additionally, the House Committee on Appropriations has deferred the deliberations of the OVP’s 2025 budget following Duterte’s refusal to provide details on how her office utilizes its funds.
