Samar Governor Sharee Ann Tan has addressed the viral video showing her dancing while being showered with money, clarifying that it was part of a long-standing cultural tradition and not a government-related event.
In an official statement, the governor said the footage was taken during Hermano Night of the Catbalogan City Fiesta, a community celebration where the traditional Kuratsa dance is performed.
“It was taken during the Hermano Night of the Catbalogan City Fiesta, community celebration where the traditional Kuratsa dance was performed,” Tan explained. She added that the practice of money showering, or gala, is a symbol of generosity and community spirit. “It is no way a display of luxury or wealth.”
The provincial government also emphasized that the event was hosted by Hermano Mayor Ruben Panaligan for the 2025 Feast of St. Bartholomew. Governor Tan joined the celebration as an invited guest. Proceeds from the gala, it said, were donated to various churches in Catbalogan City, including the St. Bartholomew Parish Church and other local chapels.
While acknowledging that some may prefer public officials to refrain from joining such activities, the governor stressed that her participation was rooted in honoring Samar’s cultural identity and supporting the local church and its communities.
