Amid the destruction left by the powerful September 30 earthquake, residents from various Cebu towns are showing resilience and generosity in touching ways—offering free food, water, and even comfort room access to rescuers and fellow survivors.
In northern towns such as Bogo, Catmon, and Daanbantayan, locals who were also hit by the magnitude 6.9 tremor could be seen holding handmade cardboard signs that read “Free boiled egg, free C.R.” and “Libre nga bibingka pasalamat sa taga Catmon, Cebu.” Others displayed coconuts with a simple note saying “For all visitors, free.”
Another man stood by the roadside with a sign saying, “Salamat South sa pagtabang ninyo sa Norte,” expressing deep gratitude to Cebuanos from southern towns who traveled north to bring aid. Groups of young men also held signs thanking volunteers: “Salamat sa inyong tabang” and “Amping sa byahe.”
These gestures emerged as rescue and relief operations intensified in quake-stricken areas where at least 72 people have died and hundreds were injured. Despite losing their own homes and livelihoods, residents continue to find ways to help others, from offering snacks and refreshments to welcoming volunteers into their communities.
