Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has initiated the trial operation of the world’s first electric abra created using 3D printing technology. This innovative project, developed in collaboration with the private sector, aims to retain the traditional abra’s identity while incorporating modern technology. The new abra can accommodate 20 passengers, according to an announcement made by the RTA on Sunday.
According to a Gulf News report, this initiative aligns with Dubai’s 3D printing strategy, which seeks to significantly reduce manufacturing time and costs. “The trial operation of the electric abra, along with improvements to traditional abra stations, is part of RTA’s master plan to enhance marine transport services in Dubai,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA. He added, “The new abra features the longest monocoque structure created using 3D printing technology, with an electric propulsion system powered by two 10-kilowatt motors and lithium batteries.”
The abra will be tested at the Sheikh Zayed Road Marine Transport Station on the TR6 line. Its performance will be closely monitored and compared with current 20-passenger fibreglass abras.
Manufactured by Al Seer Marine Company in Abu Dhabi with the support of global firms like Mitsubishi and Siemens, the project was supervised by TASNEEF to ensure safety standards. This initiative also supports RTA’s environmental sustainability goals for maritime transport.
Additionally, the RTA is working on upgrading traditional abra stations in Dubai Creek, aiming to improve marine transport services and enhance safety and security standards. The upgrades include facilities for People of Determination, retail spaces, and improved passenger waiting areas. By August 2025, the enhancement of Dubai Old Souq Station and Al Sabkha Station is expected to be completed.
The marine transport sector in Dubai has seen significant growth, boosted by the completion of the Dubai Water Canal. This expansion is set to continue with the development of urban and tourist facilities, making marine transport a preferred choice for navigating Dubai’s scenic waterways.
