RTA launches trial of hydrogen-powered buses in Dubai for sustainable transport

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has partnered with Swaidan Trading Company to trial eco-friendly hydrogen buses on urban roads in the emirate. This initiative aims to assess the buses’ adaptability to the region’s climatic conditions and explore potential challenges and opportunities in hydrogen fuel production and supply, in collaboration with ENOC and other partners.

Ahmed Hashem Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA’s Public Transport Agency, emphasized the environmental benefits and technological advancements of hydrogen buses. “These buses rely on hydrogen as a fuel source for long-distance travel. They represent a sustainable future for transportation in terms of technology and environmental impact,” Bahrozyan said. He also highlighted hydrogen’s unique properties, noting that “it is lightweight and has three times the energy density of diesel fuel while producing no harmful environmental emissions.”

The hydrogen buses are equipped with a fuel cell system from the Chinese company Zhongtong Bus Holding Co. Ltd. Bahrozyan, along with Swaidan Al Naboodah, Managing Director of Swaidan Trading Company, signed the agreement to initiate the testing phase.

RTA plans to gather feedback from drivers and passengers to continuously improve and innovate bus passenger services in Dubai.
