As Dubai braces for its peak summer months, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has confirmed that 893 air-conditioned bus shelters are now fully operational across 622 locations in the city.
The rollout follows a comprehensive inspection and maintenance drive launched in March, which will continue through the second quarter of 2025. The initiative aims to ensure commuters’ comfort and safety during the scorching season.
“In line with our commitment to ensuring the readiness of all public-facing facilities connected to public transport, the Buildings and Facilities Department has carried out proactive inspection and maintenance campaigns,” said Shaikha Ahmad AlShaikh, Director of Buildings and Facilities at the Corporate Administrative Support Services Sector, RTA.
She highlighted the round-the-clock efforts of their teams, which included site visits during various hours of the day to test operational efficiency, fix technical issues immediately, and inspect digital screens that display real-time bus schedules.
To maintain cleanliness and hygiene, the RTA also deployed sanitation patrols and emphasized its dedication to user experience through responsive feedback mechanisms. Suggestions and concerns can be sent via the ‘Madinati’ service on the RTA Dubai app, and are handled swiftly by dedicated teams.
The shelters are not only cooled but also inclusive and sustainable, built in line with the Dubai Universal Design Code. Each unit accommodates wheelchair users and features signage for easy navigation of the bus network. Their aerodynamic design also contributes to environmental resilience and offers advertising space—making them a blend of functionality and smart urban planning.
