As of January 1, 2025, travellers holding a Schengen visa from the UAE can now visit Romania and Bulgaria, following their official inclusion in the Schengen Area on New Year’s Day.
This expansion raises the number of countries in the border-free zone to 29, marking a milestone in European integration. The decision was finalized on December 12, 2024, when EU interior ministers approved lifting internal land border controls with the two nations.
Romania and Bulgaria’s journey to Schengen membership was marked by over a decade of delays since their initial bid in 2011. Their recent inclusion ensures free movement across their borders without passport checks, enhancing accessibility for international travellers.
For UAE residents, the move simplifies travel to these culturally rich nations, known for their historic landmarks and stunning natural landscapes. This development offers more options for seamless European exploration, reflecting the Schengen Area’s continued growth and commitment to fostering cooperation and border-free travel.
