The Philippine government has introduced the Balik Bayani sa Turismo program, a groundbreaking initiative designed to reintegrate Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) into the local economy by offering them opportunities in the tourism sector. This collaborative effort between the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Department of Tourism (DOT) aims to leverage the skills and international experience of OFWs, providing them and their families with free training and job prospects in various tourism-related fields.
Hans Leo J. Cacdac, the DMW Officer-in-Charge, emphasized the program’s role in supporting OFWs who wish to return home permanently, offering them a sustainable source of income in the local tourism industry. The program offers comprehensive training in culinary tourism, farm tourism, homestay operations, and tour guiding. Additionally, OFWs with specialized skills are encouraged to join the DOT’s pool of experts, contributing as resource persons in government initiatives.
The initiative is not just about employment but also entrepreneurship, as the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) will provide scholarship grants for those aiming to become tourism service providers or enterprise owners.
DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco highlighted the unique value OFWs bring as “tourism ambassadors,” given their global experience and competence.
