Innovative technology is making it possible to use treated sewage water to brew beer, an initiative aimed at promoting sustainable water usage. The project, known as “Reuse Brew,” is a collaboration between the Chair of Brewery and Beverage Technology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the Chair of Urban Water Systems Engineering at TUM, the city of Weissenburg, and water technology company Xylem.
According to Fox Business, the primary goal of Reuse Brew is to showcase the potential of modern water treatment processes and highlight sustainable water use. The beer is not yet available for purchase but serves as a demonstration of how treated wastewater can be safely reused, particularly in response to the growing challenge of water shortages due to climate change.
“We are currently experiencing very frequent water shortages due to climate change,” explained Huebner, one of the project’s proponents. “And one way to counteract this is to reuse treated wastewater.”
Feedback from those who have tasted the beer at a trade fair in Munich has been overwhelmingly positive. “It’s delicious,” said Nadine Krogull. “You don’t realize that it’s waste water.”
Sebastian Beck, another taster, echoed this sentiment, stating, “I don’t notice any difference to a normal beer. It’s really good.”
