A driver caused a severe crash at a busy intersection, breaking multiple traffic rules in a matter of seconds in the capital of the UAE. The Abu Dhabi Police released a video on Friday showing a black SUV making a series of dangerous maneuvers leading to the crash.
The footage revealed the SUV, initially in a lane designated for going straight, illegally turning left. Compounding this, the driver made the turn against a red light, crashing into a vehicle crossing the intersection. The impact sent the other vehicle spinning uncontrollably.
Abu Dhabi Police identified distracted driving as the key factor in the incident. The driver appeared to be preoccupied with activities other than driving, such as possibly using a phone or other distractions.
Distracted driving in Abu Dhabi carries a penalty of a Dh800 fine and four black points. Additionally, the SUV driver also committed the offense of running a red light, which results in a Dh1,000 fine, 12 black points, and a 30-day vehicle confiscation. To reclaim the vehicle, a hefty Dh50,000 fine must be paid. Failure to pay this within three months could lead to the vehicle being auctioned.
In light of this incident, the Abu Dhabi Police have reiterated their call for drivers to maintain focus on the road, paying heed to pedestrians and road signs to prevent such dangerous situations.
