Rare soap-sized plant bred in the Philippines sells for half a million pesos

A tiny plant no larger than a bar of soap is turning heads at the Horti Filipina International Plant Show — and not just for its size. According to a social media post by Luke Ohms, the Sansevieria BG Regale, bred in the Philippines, is commanding a staggering price of ₱500,000, making it one of the most expensive plants at the exhibit.

What makes it even more remarkable is its origin. The BG Regale is not an imported variety, but a homegrown ornamental developed by Filipino breeder Boyet B. Ganigan of Arid Aroids. Its name proudly carries his initials — “BG.”

Years ago, Ganigan’s original mother plant reportedly received a jaw-dropping ₱10 million offer, which he declined — a testament to its rarity and value in the global plant collector market.

While collectors may be familiar with sought-after imports like the Monstera deliciosa ‘Galadriel,’ the BG Regale is a celebration of Filipino innovation in horticulture. Beyond its hefty price tag, the plant symbolizes a growing movement that fuses science, art, and business — placing Filipino breeders on the global map.
