The Holy Month of Ramadan is set to commence on March 11, 2024, as per astronomical calculations. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society, announced this date, indicating a shift in the observance of Ramadan into the winter season. This shift will continue until Ramadan 1453 AH in 2031, after which it will transition into the autumn season.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a period of great spiritual importance, commemorating the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him). It is one of the five pillars of Islam, observed by adult Muslims through fasting from dawn until dusk, symbolizing devotion and self-discipline.
In the UAE and other Islamic countries, the beginning of Ramadan is determined by moon sighting. The decision is based on official announcements from the moon-sighting committee in Mecca, the most sacred city in Islam. The start of Ramadan depends on the sighting of the new crescent moon and usually lasts for 29 or 30 days.
UAE’s Ramadan traditions commence in mid-Shaaban with Hagg Al Layla, a festive event where Emirati children, dressed in colorful attire, visit neighbors to collect sweets and nuts, singing traditional songs. The daily fast during Ramadan includes two main meals: Suhoor, eaten before sunrise, and Iftar, the meal to break the fast at sunset, traditionally started with dates and laban.
