Starting January 1, 2024, single-use plastic bags will no longer be permitted in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), as announced by the emirate’s authorities on Tuesday.
The declaration came via a statement on the social media platform X by RAK’s Environment Protection and Development Authority (EPDA). The new law, initiated by His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, a member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, solidifies the UAE’s ongoing drive to diminish plastic consumption.
According to the EPDA, the ban targets plastic bags handed out in establishments like grocery stores, bakeries, clothing boutiques, and electronic retailers, to name a few.
Ras Al Khaimah is not the only emirate taking progressive steps to curb plastic usage. In 2022, Dubai began charging a 25-fil fee for every bag on July 1. Concurrently, Abu Dhabi enforced a complete ban on single-use plastics starting June 1. Following suit, Sharjah introduced a 25-fil fee for each bag from October 1, 2022, with plans for a full prohibition by January 1, 2024. Similarly, Umm Al Quwain and Ajman have also signaled intentions to cease plastic bag circulation in 2023.
